A love of reading and a desire to help others are all that is needed to train to become a tutor for Literacy Link. We provide the training, materials and support at no cost to the tutor.

Literacy Link uses Open Minds 3 Tutor Training Workshop, which was
developed by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. Open Minds is fun, interesting, and informative, and is delivered in variety of formats, including demonstrations, small group work, PowerPoint, and learning stations. The training gives volunteers the basic skills thy need to be successful tutors. Prospective tutors attend one
seven-hour training and then are matched with a student. After a few months of experience tutoring, one three-hour follow up training is required.

A variety of print materials are provided at no cost to the tutor. In addition, Literacy Link has a five-station computer lab with access to learning programs and the Internet.

Three-hour Continuing Education Workshops are offered on Saturdays four times a year. At these workshops, trainers and guests discuss topics related to teaching reading to adults. Although these are not required workshops, they are always informative and we encourage tutors to attend.

Bi-monthly Tutor Talks are held on the first Tuesday every other month at 6:30 in the evening. Besides being an opportunity to discuss problems, solutions, and successes, Tutor Talks provide an opportunity to network with other tutors and learn from each other.
