Tutors

A love of reading and a desire to help others are all that are needed to receive free training to become a tutor for Literacy Link. We provide all the training, materials, and continued support at no cost to the tutor.

Training
Literacy Link uses Open Minds Tutor Training Workshop, which was

developed by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. Open Minds is  delivered in variety of formats, including demonstrations, small group work, PowerPoint, and learning stations. The training gives volunteers the basic skills needed to be a successful tutor. Prospective tutors attend a total of 10 hours of training delivered in three sessions.  Tutors are then matched with a student.

Materials

A variety of print materials are provided at no cost to the tutor. In addition, Literacy Link has a five-station computer lab with access to learning programs and the Internet.

Support

As continued support for tutors, there are continuing education workshops offered where trainers and guests discuss topics related to teaching reading to adults. This is an excellent opportunities for tutors to gain more skills and network with others.

Bi-monthly Tutor Talks are held on the first Tuesday every other month at 6:30 in the evening. Tutors are asked to share topics of interest for these meetings.  At the meetings tutors share their successes and can seek insight from other tutors for challenges.

There are opportunities available now for tutors -- Call Literacy Link at (405) 732-2737 and be a part of someone's success story.
